ALL ABOUT PCOS / PCOD (POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME)

WHAT IS PCOS?

First of all things to say…. It is not a disease. Just like some has black and some has blue eyes, PCOS is an inherent tendency of a woman to have hormonal imbalance => cysts in ovary => irregular periods / other symptoms. They may or may not have irregular cycles. It all depends on other factors which makes the PCOS significant enough to affect your cycles/ fertility.

SO WHAT MAKES YOU MOVE TOWARDS PCOS MORE ?

  • Stress
  • Obesity/ overweight
  • Diabetes
  • Harmful food habits
  • Few Other medical conditions

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OR SIGNS OF PCOS ?

  • Hair getting thinned out
  • Hair fall
  • Excess unwanted hair (upper lip, chin, chest, abdomen)
  • Decrease in size of breast
  • Irregular cycles
  • Belly fat
  • Mood swings
  • Painful menstruation
  • Voice changes
NOTE: Not every PCOS woman has all these symptoms.

MYTH or FACT ?

“A PCOS woman will always be overweight”
It’s a myth. Even being UNDERWEIGHT, one can have PCOS.

WHAT HAPPENS IN PCOS?

  • Pre-diabetic / diabetic (due to insulin resistance)
  • Imbalance in your female hormones
  • Increased male hormone (testosterone)

Any of the above may predominate in individuals differently.
"They may or may not have insulin resistance"
"May or may not have irregular cycles"
We shall just say that grossly,
  • One who has more insulin resistance go towards overweight. Many such persons overcome PCOS just by losing few kgs.
  • One who is lean and has increasing male hormones and stress becomes more and more lean appearance, decreasing breast size and with only central fat deposition if at all. i.e around belly. These persons after treatment, gains weight with even distribution of fat and gets a normal body mass.

So how can we overcome PCOS ? lifestyle? Food?
